How has your participation in the Bioscience Program had an impact on your career?
The Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program provided me with ample lab experience, which allowed me to not only make contributions to the scientific community but also be nationally recognized as an undergraduate.  This recognition opened the door for me to receive a top internship at the NIH and later be accepted to Harvard, which were critical for me to get started on the career path I desired.  The Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program was the foundation to me having my current career.

What advice would you give current students who aspire to follow a similar career path?
Often one must sacrifice the immediate opportunity realizing that it may distract them from greater opportunities in the future.  I often turned down higher paying jobs during my undergraduate career to work in a research lab.  I did this knowing that working in a research lab would provide me greater opportunities in the career I wanted to pursue throughout my life.  In other words: Don't sacrifice your long term goals for short sighted accolades.

What accomplishments are you most proud of (professionally and/or personally)?
Professionally, I am most proud of being a first generation college student and graduating with a Ph.D. 3 years ahead of the average. I am also proud that I worked in several different labs including: the NIH, University of Utah, and Harvard and that I was recognized for my research by Science magazine as an undergraduate. Personally, I am most proud to have a wife and three children through my academic career.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?  Family?  Hobbies?  Interests?
I enjoy lifting weights and playing with my three children.  I also enjoy reading political sci-fi books, and closely following the Boston Red Sox.  Additionally, I really enjoy serving in my local church and playing an active roll in community charities.
