Kristen Taylor
Professor of Biology
Salt Lake Community College

Kristen Taylor

Kristen received her Ph.D. in Biology and Master of Science in Zoology from the University of Hawaii, and her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Utah.  She is currently a Professor of Biology at Salt Lake Community College and enjoys constantly learning in her role as a college professor. She once read a bumper sticker that she felt said it all:  “Teaching: filling the void between the ears”. She enjoys that she is able to share all the fun stuff that she learns, or discovers from her own research and share it with the next generation of scientists. It never get’s boring.

How has your participation in the Bioscience Program had an impact on your career?
The Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program showed me that science is a dynamic, hands-on discipline.  You learn how to explore concepts and how to utilize the tools to do it as well as learn how to communicate what you’ve learned in a calm, professional manner.  I cannot imagine obtaining a degree in science without having had practical experience working in science – the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program gave me this experience.  I cannot say enough good things about this program and the amazing teachers, researchers and staff that make it possible.  I highly encourage anyone who actually wants to experience real biological science to participate in this program.

What advice would you give current students who aspire to follow a similar career path?
Follow your passion.  Never let anyone tell you what you can and cannot accomplish – if you can dream it, you can do it.

What accomplishments are you most proud of (professionally and/or personally)?
I am thrilled with the varied research opportunities I have had.  I have obtained the first ever Head-related Transfer Function (HRTF) on a bottlenose dolphin, participated in the first audiograms on polar bears and wild-caught white beaked dolphins.  In addition, I have worked to create clinical tests in immunology and spent a summer studying the wildlife of the Great Salt Lake.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?  Family?  Hobbies?  Interests? I love to trampoline, swim, hike, bike, garden, cook, ride motorcycles and travel.
