David Jones
Graduate Student, Biomedical Informatics
University of Utah

David Jones

David received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology with Honors Designation from the University of Utah and is now working towards his Ph.D. at the Biomedical Informatics Graduate Program at the University of Utah.  David’s research is focused on predicting the cytoxicity of dendrimers and is fully funded by the National Library of Medicine. He enjoys seeing his efforts come to fruition, and is amazed to see something that was originally just an idea or thought become a fully functional entity.

How has your participation in the Bioscience Program had an impact on your career?
In my previous position as an ARUP clinical chemist I used the general laboratory techniques I learned in the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program on a daily basis. As a graduate student I am using the presentation and writing skills that I gained through the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program as well. The training and skills that I received in the program have been incredibly useful and enriching in my continued pursuit of becoming a professional scientist.

What advice would you give current students who aspire to follow a similar career path?
My advice to current students who aspire to follow a similar career path is to work hard every day, never give up, be involved, and enjoy life.

What accomplishments are you most proud of (professionally and/or personally)?
Professionally, I am most proud of being accepted to the University of Utah's Biomedical Informatics Graduate Program with full funding from the National Library of Medicine. Personally, I am most proud of my community service work with the Utah Tennis Association. With the help of the Utah Tennis Association, I was able to create a program, “Make a Racket for Kids,” to teach tennis to underprivileged youth. As a result of this community service work, the Utah Tennis Association awarded me with their Community Service Award in 2010.

What do you enjoy doing with your free time?  Family?  Hobbies?  Interests?
I enjoy watching and engaging in sports including basketball, snowboarding and tennis. I also enjoy traveling when given the opportunity, and spending time with my family.
