Biological facts and concepts appear almost everywhere in modern life because we and the most important elements of our environment are living things, and because our rapidly growing knowledge of life gives rise to increasingly powerful practical applications. Today, biology makes close contact not just with the other basic sciences and medicine, but also with the social sciences, law, and engineering. Thus the study of biology is ideal preparation for a very wide range of careers.

The number of undergraduate Biology majors at the University of Utah has grown from around 250 to more than 1000 during the last decade. The Department has worked hard to accommodate this explosion of interest in biology. With the change to semesters in 1998 we restructured the entire curriculum to make it both easier to navigate and more effective educationally. We have also developed innovative new courses (for example, in mathematics for biologists), and we have greatly increased the involvement of undergraduates in both laboratory and field research (for example, through the Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program). Students pursuing a rigorous course of study including independent research may be admitted to the Biology Honors Program.

Building 44 The links below can be used to download information about requirements for the major in Biology, about course offerings, about research opportunities, and about sources of scholarship support. However, these documents are no substitute for direct personal interaction with the staff of our superb Undergraduate Advising Office, which is located on the first floor of Building 44 (see photo at right). If you are thinking about majoring in Biology, then you should drop in and talk with these friendly and well informed people early in your freshman year. Good planning will speed your progress and greatly enhance your educational experience.
