How to apply to the
Bioscience Undergraduate Research Program


Application deadline: April 8, 2009
At the time of application, eligible students must:
  • Plan to be a full-time student at the University of Utah during the upcoming academic year.
  • Be completing at least 1 year of university course work, assuming full time enrollment, and have at least 2 years of University coursework remaining before graduation.
  • Be completing at least two courses in science or math at the college level.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Have a demonstrable interest in doing research in the biological sciences.
Students apply to enter the program at Level 1: Exploring topics of and opportunities in biological research.
  • Through special seminar and laboratory courses, in combination with individual advising sessions with program personnel, students explore in depth their interests in biological research, learn techniques used in many research laboratories, and receive guidance towards finding a research sponsor on campus.
  • Approximately 20 Level 1 awards will be made. Selected students will begin program activities on August 10, 2009, and will receive a $1,000 cash award distributed throughout the academic year. Most students will begin the research experience during late Spring semester of 2010.
  • Students are required to enroll in the Basic Techniques Laboratory (Bio2115), (Aug. 10-21, 2009), the Faculty Research Seminar (Bio2870, Fall semester), and the Student Journal Club (Bio4876, Fall and Spring semesters), in which each student is required to make two presentations.
Students who successfully complete Level 1 will be invited to continue in the program for another year at Level 2: Continuing exploration and research.
  • Undergraduates already engaged in research are afforded the chance to continue developing their research skills.
  • Participants are eligible to serve as teaching assistants for the Basic Techniques Laboratory .
  • Participants receive salary support for their research endeavors over the summer and academic year.
  • Each student is required to enroll in the Student Journal Club (Bio4876, Fall and Spring semesters) and make two presentations.
  • Level 2 students are eligible to receive a $1000 cash award distributed throughout the academic year. Receipt of this award is contingent upon the student's continued participation in each aspect of the program.
Application Procedure. It is the applicant's responsibility to see that ALL application materials are received by the program office. The following is a checklist of items required for a complete application:
  1. Application form
  2. Essay (1-2 pgs. typed) describing academic interests and career goals
  3. An official copy of your college transcript(s)
  4. Letter of recommendation (may be mailed separately by the recommender, or included with the application in a sealed envelope signed by the recommender across the flap). Preferably, the letter should be from a college science professor. Also acceptable is a recommendation from a nonscience professor at the college level.

  • Strong interest in the sciences
  • Scholastic record
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Essay describing interests in science and/or science education
  • Interview
