Marine invertebrates, such as sponges and tunicates, defend themselves from predation using toxic chemicals, many of which are potential pharmaceutical agents. In some cases, bacteria living symbiotically within invertebrate tissue are the actual producers of these molecules. We are studying the interaction between bacteria and invertebrates to tease apart biosynthetic pathways and to better understand the relationships between these organisms.
