Caterpillar Database - Interpreting the database

Taxonomic information:
When available, taxonomic information is given. The authority who identified the specimens is listed under “Collection Information”
“Morphospecies code” is an internal unique identification code.
“Damage type” is herbivore or pathogen damage.

Description of Damage Agent:
Provides a description of the herbivore. This may be accompanied by photos of larvae and adults with links to additional photos.

Description of Damage:
Provides a description of the type of damage caused to leaves. This may be accompanied by a photo.

Diet Breadth:
Leaf age:          Indicates if larvae feed on mature leaves, young leaves or both.
Other host plants:          Indicates other host plants on which the larvae have been collected.

Herbivore traits:
House: Yes (the caterpillar builds a house by cutting leaves and/or tying leaves together with silk)
No (the caterpillar does not construct a house)
Hairs:   None (the caterpillar is completely lacking in hairs easily visible to the naked eye)
Sparse (hairs are either found in clumps or widely dispersed in the body)
Dense (there are hairs all over the body)
Spines: Categories as for “hairs”
Color:   Cryptic (the color of the caterpillar blends in with its surroundings)
Medium (the caterpillar is apparent upon inspection. This category is typically applied to caterpillars where the head and body color do not match e.g. brown head and green body)
Warning (the caterpillar has bright contrasting colors, particularly red, black, yellow and white)
Gregarious:  Yes (caterpillars are found in groups)
            No ( caterpillars live singly)
Position: Hiding (caterpillars are concealed when not feeding. Hiding behavior includes moving to the leaf underside, twig or stem so as to be less conspicuous to predators when not feeding. House builders are considered to be hiding).
Obvious (caterpillars are immediately apparent making no attempt to conceal themselves from visually hunting predators)
Frass:   provides a description of frass buildup
Cut veins: indicates if caterpillars cut veins while feeding.
Leaf scraping: indicates if caterpillars scrape only the leaf surface while feeding
Miner: indicates if the caterpillar mines the leaf.
Gall:     indicates if the caterpillar galls the leaf.
